Gateway to the Glens Museum

This small but interesting museum tells the story of Kirriemuir’s history, people, literature, music and more. It’s a great place to learn more about the town before heading out to explore. Based in the former Kirriemuir Townhouse, highlights include a historic model of the town and a natural history display.

Historic town centre

Wander the charming cobbled streets of the wee red toon, so called because of its distinctive red sandstone buildings. Here, you’ll find unique local shops, cosy cafes and welcoming pubs and restaurants. Don’t miss Scotland’s oldest sweet shop, Star Rock Shop.

Birthplace of J.M. Barrie

Kirriemuir is best known as the birthplace of author J.M. Barrie. There’s a bronze statue of Peter Pan in the town centre, a tribute to his most famous creation. The cottage where he was born is now a museum, where you can learn about the writer’s early life, see original manuscripts and original Peter Pan costumes.

Kirriemuir Camera Obscura

Located on Kirrie Hill, the Camera Obscura was gifted to the town by J.M. Barrie in 1930. It offers a fascinating way to see the surrounding area through an old optical projection system. The building also provides incredible panoramic views of the Angus countryside, making it a great spot for photography and sightseeing on a clear day.

Neverland Park

Also on Kirrie Hill, this children’s play park was designed to commemorate J.M. Barrie’s 150th birthday. Kids can play in the pirate ship, Lost Boys hideout, aerial slide and more.

Bon Scott Memorial

Bon Scott, the legendary lead singer of AC/DC, was also born in Kirriemuir, before emigrating to Australia as a child. He is honored with a life-size bronze statue that attracts rock fans from all over the world. The town also hosts the annual Bonfest, a festival celebrating his life and music.
