Springtime in the Glen

Glen Clova is one of the most beautiful, remote glens in the Angus region of Scotland, especially in spring. At this time of year, the glen bursts into life with lush greenery and abundant wildlife. For guests of Glen Clova Hotel and Lodges, this beautiful area is yours to explore. Whether you enjoy outdoor adventures or simply soaking in breathtaking landscapes, there’s a variety of activities to make the most of the spring season…

Hiking in the Cairngorms

Glen Clova sits on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park, making it an excellent base for walking and hiking. And as the spring weather arrives, it’s an opportunity to enjoy longer and more challenging walks. One of the most popular local routes is the climb up to Loch Brandy, a stunning corrie loch nestled among towering cliffs. The hike is moderate in difficulty and offers spectacular views of the glen below. Another challenging but rewarding hike is up to Driesh and Mayar, two Munros that offer panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape.

Exploring Glen Doll

Located at the head of Glen Clova, Glen Doll Forest is a peaceful and scenic place to explore in the spring. Jock’s Road starts here and leads through a mix of pine and deciduous woodlands, with rushing streams and waterfalls along the way. You can also enjoy waymarked trails, such as the Corrie Fee Walk and the White Water Trail.

Wildlife watching

Spring is a fantastic time for spotting wildlife at Glen Clova. Red deer and mountain hares can be seen roaming the hillsides. Birdwatchers should look out for golden eagles, peregrine falcons and osprey soaring overhead. The glen is also home to a variety of smaller birds, such as skylarks and meadow pipits. Not so wild, but our spring lambs will be out in the fields too!

River South Esk fishing

For those who enjoy fishing, the River South Esk, which flows through Glen Clova, provides excellent opportunities for trout and salmon fishing. Spring is one of the best times to cast a line, as fish become more active after the colder months. You can arrange fishing and permits through our hotel, along with guided instruction, with enough notice.
